Know the Tornado Categories
The Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale is a set of wind estimates (taken over three seconds) based on the intensity of damage caused.

EFO - Wind Speed: 64-85 mph. Damage: Gale strength winds; light damage, e.g., loss of shingles or other roofing materials; may last between one and 10 minutes.
EF1 - Wind Speed: 86-110 mph. Damage: Weak winds; moderate damage, e.g., garage doors collapse inward or outward; may last around 10 minutes.
EF2 - Wind Speed: 111-135 mph.  Damage: Strong winds with considerable damage, e., broken glass in doors or windows; collapse of roof structure; may last up to 20 minutes.
EF3 - Wind Speed: 136-165 mph. Damage: Severe winds, significant damage, e.g., top floor exterior walls collapsed, may last longer than 20 minutes.
EF4 - Wind Speed: 166-200 mph. Damage: Destructive winds; devastating damage, e.g., total destruction of buildings, may last up to one hour.
EF5 - Wind Speed: over 200 mph. Damage: Incredible winds; catastrophic damage, e.g., buildings blown away; may last longer than one hour.

Know the Hazards
Tornadoes are the most severe of all atmospheric storms. They may strike quickly, with little or no warning, and can cause fatalities and devastate a neighborhood in seconds.  The whirling winds of a tornado can reach 300 mph, uprooting trees and buildings, and turning ordinary objects into deadly missiles.

Other Hazards that Accompany Tornadoes

  • Lightning
  • Straight-line winds up to 140 mph
  • Hail the size of grapefruit
